Why A&E/ER nurses?
Emergency departments are on the front lines of healthcare, and there will always be a need for qualified nurses to handle the constant flow of patients with unexpected illnesses and injuries. As the population ages, there’s an increase in chronic conditions that can lead to emergencies. This strains ER resources and requires more nurses to provide care. ER nurses need to be adaptable and have a broad range of skills to handle a wide variety of medical situations. This makes them valuable assets in the emergency department.
Here’s what one ER nurse on Reddit said: “The ER is very broad and you’ll get patients with respiratory, orthopedic, gynecological, cardiac, renal and all types of other issues. You’re not limited to a certain body part, system or even population. You’ll have patients of all ages. You’ll also get a wide variety of acuity. From bullshit 2am drug seeking toe pain to cardiac arrests, ROSCs, traumas, stabbings, MVCs and more. Not every patient will be super high acuity but you do utilize a lot of critical care skills frequently.
You never know what a shift will bring you and you’ve got to be prepared for anything. Also if you value continuity of care and developing longer relationships with your patients, just know that you won’t be getting that in the ER. Our involvement in patient care is usually pretty limited compared to the floors. On the floors you may be taking care of the same patient for weeks or months at a time and get the opportunity to develop a connection with them. With some patients my involvement has been limited to giving them meds and discharge instructions.
In the ER we turnover patients so fast you won’t get this same opportunity to develop deep connection with patients. Though now these days some patients board in the ER for so long they get discharged from the ER before getting a bed on the floor. I feel that we have a much closer relationship to the doctors compared to other specialties as they’re there with us at all times. It’s a very fast paced specialty that I’ve greatly enjoyed!”
