Why BICU nurses?
Burn unit nurses are integral to the wellbeing of the UK. Though it is quite a specialised role, there are many opportunities throughout Manchester in facilities like wards, burn centres, clinics, and children’s hospitals. BICU nurses are in demand– 250,000 people present to primary care teams and 300 people die from burn-related injuries per year.
To be a BICU nurse, you’ll need RN licensure and experience in a critical care unit like the ICU or A&E department. Though not a strict requirement, additional certification like burn life support might be required. Moreover, burn unit nurses need soft skills like empathy, patience, good communication skills and critical thinking.
Here’s what one Reddit nurse said: “Burn nursing is definitely a special calling. My first job was in a burn unit. I learned so much about wound care, hemodynamics, and shock. It was very interesting to me, as I like wound care, but it can be rough. It is very satisfying when someone gets better and is able to go home. When you can bring comfort to those in pain. Some strong bonds can form if you let them. It’s a good specialty to go into and you will learn a lot.”
