Why PICU nursing?
PICU nurses are like music to the blind. They are the most acutely ill people back down to earth, forming positive relationships with and mentoring them. While the role’s hands-on activities usually consist of taking blood pressure and charting, it’s more about helping these patients recover from the illness that has so possessed them.
The role can be emotionally gruelling: some days may require nurses to utilise their PMVA training, call the police, inject rapid tranquilisers, and physically restrain patients. On other days RMNs might happily bid a patient goodbye and watch as they take their first steps into a renewed world.
This is the lustre of PICU nursing: each and every day is different. You’ll be treating man’s most acute invisible illness, truly making a difference where it matters most.
