A lot of mothers choose to have children later in life, too, increasing the risk of prenatal conditions and early births. Additionally, nurse turnover is high, and so nurse-to-patient ratios are becoming increasingly high, leading to a steady demand for nurses specialised in newborn resuscitation and the like.
To be a neonatal nurse, you’ll need to have storehouses of empathy for mothers and their families. You’d also need to be comfortable caring for not one, but two patients at one time. Moreover, you’ll need experience working in critical care or the postpartum ward, as well as specialised certification or cross-training to work in the NICU, as these newborns’ lives are incredibly fragile.
