Roles of an FRN
Forensic nurses are nearly always in demand in Birmingham because of the perilously high crime rates. We need you to help victims of violence. You’ll be responsible for assessing patients for evidence of bodily harm and DNA– including tissues, blood, and semen.
On the more emotional side, you should be compassionate and able to support victims emotionally. You may also have to testify in court as an expert witness using the evidence you’ve gathered. You’ll serve as the bridge between healthcare and legal systems. Exciting, right?
You might also be labelled a SAFE or SANE nurse, as most often you’ll help victims of sexual assault while conducting rape kits. You’ll have a positive and long-lasting effect on patients’ lives, often working in the emergency room caring for human trafficking victims, intimate/domestic partner violence, and sexual assault victims. Know that you may also work within the correctional system. Other areas of forensic nursing work include death investigation, community emergency response, and legal nurse consulting.

Experience You’ll Need
You’ll need at least two years of experience before applying for the role, preferably in the emergency room or in labour and delivery. Work in an area with experience in de-escalation, traumatic events, therapeutic communication, and exposure to women’s health, and sometimes men’s health.
