Why transplant nurses?
As the number of invasive procedures increases, so does the need for transplant nurses. With the rise of cardiovascular and respiratory organ failure, more heart, lung, kidney, and other organ transplants happen. This is also in connection with the United Kingdom’s ageing population. The older one gets, the more at risk they are for organ failure, cancer, and other chronic organ diseases.
To be a transplant nurse, you’ll need to have loads of empathy, patience, and a ridiculously strong stomach. In addition, you’ll need to have RN licensure, and med-surg nurse experience (or any experience in a high acuity setting). Transplant nurse certification doesn’t hurt, either.
One Reddit nurse says: “Bone marrow transplant nurse here, I freaking love it. My patients are the nicest people I’ve ever met. They can get sick FAST, but they are there for extended periods (1 month+), so you really get to know them and recognize changes more easily. It’s definitely a learning curve, but so worth it.”
