Why NICU nurses?
Neonatal ICU nurses are particularly in demand for several reasons. Firstly, premature birth rates are on the rise, due to the heightened amount of mothers using nicotine during pregnancy. This demands specialised and constant care only NICU nurses can provide.
NICU RNs need a deep understanding of neonatal development, advanced medical equipment, and life-saving procedures. This specialised knowledge creates a barrier to entry, keeping demand high for qualified RNs. On top of that, the UK and the world face an unforeseen nursing shortage, creating a highly competitive recruitment and job market across all specialities.
The NICU is a desirable speciality to work in because of its low unemployment risk. These RNs also receive competitive salaries because of the nature, specialised skills required, and stress of their work. Most importantly, working in the NICU makes a humongous difference in families’ and childrens’ lives, making working in the speciality a very rewarding experience.
Most NICU RNs describe the job as heavy on caregiver and parent health education and a lower acuity environment. You’re vital to the development of parents’ babies, and so will have to effectively communicate with families.
What NICU RNs say
One nurse on Reddit shared advice for working in neonatal ICU; “I would never discourage anyone going to the NICU. The babies need you and the parents need you. The mom that is sitting at her baby’s bedside day and night. Reading, singing, crying. Encourage that mom, that even though she can’t hold her baby, she is doing exactly what her baby needs by just being there. The baby that hasn’t had a visitor in days sometimes even weeks and only cuddle time is feeding or with the volunteers. Those babies usually become “adopted” by the staff. We buy them clothes, play with them, and sing to them, hoping for a happy ending. There is SO much to learn. Seek out learning opportunities.”
