More on The Role
Support workers play a vital role in empowering people with long-term and chronic illnesses to live comfortably.
Personal Care
Of course, the level of care you’ll provide varies from patient to patient, but generally, you’ll help by providing:
- Emotional support: Listening to problems and providing a shoulder to cry on. Long-term and chronic illness can elicit big feelings, especially grief and anxiety. Many patients have reported feeling an overwhelming sense of impending doom, feeling scared, and feeling powerless or hopeless. It’s your job to aid in maintaining a sense of optimism through tough times.
- Bathing and hygiene: You’ll likely assist with bathing and washing, an integral part of maintaining patients’ well-being. You could also be expected to help with toileting and managing
- incontinence products.
- Medication administration: Medication administration is a huge part of home healthcare. You should take notes of side effects, adverse effects and abnormal behaviour while on duty. Many patients take blood pressure medication or antidepressants.
- Feeding and meal preparation: Get your chef hat on! You might have to cook and shop for your patients if they can’t.
- Recreational activities: Everyone needs to have fun! Arrange excursions to places like parks and museums, taking into account special interests and hobbies.
- Household chores: Expect to do things like hoovering, mopping, and dishes.
You should do all these things while maintaining the utmost respect for your patient. It’s also important to encourage independence insofar as you can. Moreover, you must educate patients on their conditions and what they can expect when living with their condition.
