Scotland
In May of 2024, local publication The Scotsman wrote that Scotland needs almost 4000 nurses to cover its supply shortage. This follows a report from the Royal College of Nursing stating that the healthcare staffing shortage has little improved. In addition, its poor population health increasingly strains its already fragile healthcare system. Urgent action, such as the introduction of new legislation and pressure on healthcare employers is needed to address this with specialist nursing roles.
Scotland, the RCN’s report found, also lagged behind the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average of 9.2 nurses per 1,000 of the population, with 7.9. The country was also well behind the figures for Finland, Norway and Ireland, which boasted 18.9, 18.3 and 15.2 respectively.
